Samsung has decided to remain behind the line and announced its failure to install the Satellite Communication feature in the recently released Galaxy S23 but Honor doesn’t seem to repeat this mistake, as it has now a certificate to use capability in its smartphones.

According to the information, China National Intellectual Property Administration AKA CNIPA has published an application filed by Honor. It is now authorized and revealed the company’s approval for “an electric device with integrated Beidou short message feature”.

This confirms that Honor is ready to debut this satellite communication in smartphones. However, an exact date or model has not been disclosed at the moment. Honor Magic 5 series will launch on February 27 at MWC 2023 Barcelona and it’s suitable for such technology in Honor’s campaign.

Honor satellite communication

The satellite communication technology allows you to send short text messages with China’s Beiduo satellite. However, Apple is using Globalstar satellite services in the U.S. If required, the phone will let you send a short message when you don’t have a mobile network at all. This feature comes into play in any emergency use case.

Huawei was the first to launch satellite communication in the industry and the company has already planned to launch the second generation feature to this satellite-connected smartphone feature.

Samsung launched its new Galaxy S23 Ultra, the ultra variant from the S23 lineup, as its name says, the phone is the mightiest in terms of camera numbers and it’s time that we compare this flagship with Huawei Mate 50 Pro in terms of numbers and capability.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with an HP2 sensor inside a 200-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture, the number claims high quality with extra light intake. There are various clips to demonstrate Night/low light photography with a small aperture.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Let’s see Huawei Mate 50 Pro, aside from that 200-megapixel camera, Samsung S23 Ultra doesn’t stand a chance against Huawei Mate 50 Pro’s ultra aperture camera system. Why? Because Huawei is a customized version of the SONY IMX sensor, specially designed for the Mate 50 Pro smartphone.

Although, Mate 50 Pro is not an Ultra model but it comes with an ultra-large f/1.4 aperture that boasts 24% more light with the RYYB color system.

Huawei Mate 50 flagship

The camera of Mate 50 Pro also provides powerful bokeh shots that really blur the background and highlight the subject with its powerful aperture prowess.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with AI-powered image processing APIs and it could make use of that 200 MP camera system but Huawei Mate 50 Pro could perform image refining tasks even better with its new imaging system called XMAGE.

XMAGE fine-tunes colors and textures, creates vivid contrast, and highlights bright and dark areas to create a first-in-hand impression.

Huawei Mate 50 Pro

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra doesn’t promote the capability to shoot macro but Mate 50 Pro won’t disappoint you, because it has the world’s most powerful macro photography and now a video section that will lead you to the closest to the smallest object in your sight.

Next comes the Ultra wide-angle camera, which counts at 12MP on Galaxy S23 Ultra with f/2.2 aperture and 120-degree field of view. On the other hand, Huawei uses a high-quality 13MP ultra-wide lens to cover all of the group in one picture with identical aperture and FOV.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has dual telephoto cameras, one is a 10MP optical and another is a 10MP periscope. According to the information, these lenses switch automatically.

The periscope camera has a maximum of 10X optical zoom with f/4.9 aperture. On the other hand, Huawei Mate 50 Pro comes with a 64MP Periscope camera that has an f/3.5 aperture camera that could reach a long-long 10X while maintaining the photo quality.

Nowadays, we’re close to our smartphones than ever and this close partnership could bring some eye fatigue powered by Blue light. However, there’s a feature called Eye comfort that is pre-blended on Huawei EMUI to save your eyes, adding to this, we’ll also compare it with the Samsung One UI counterpart.

Although, smartphone makers are enhancing the display panel for the best quality possible but blue light emissions cannot be stopped.

Digital Eyestrain:

Using devices up close or for long periods can lead to digital eyestrain. Research has shown that when people use computers, laptops, and other digital devices, they tend to blink less often than normal. Fewer blinks can mean less moisture. Digital eyestrain means different things to different people but is generally related to the focusing system of the eyes.

Eye comfort:

A blue light filter decreases the amount of blue light displayed on the screen of the device, which can suppress the production of the sleep-inducing hormone, so filtering it out can help you sleep better. It will also help you to reduce digital eye strain.

Coming to the comparison, both Huawei EMUI and Samsung One UI come with eye comfort features and it’s time that we look into the aspects.

samsung one ui huawei emui eye comfort

Eye Schedule:

The Eye schedule feature allows you to enable/disable eye comfort with start and end time.

All Day:

Once enabled, the feature overlaps the screen for the entire time until you turn it off manually.

Level:

A slider is available on both software that filters out blue light to reduce eye fatigue, you can slide it left or right to increase/reduce the filter strength.

Flicker reduction:

Only Huawei EMUI comes with a flicker reduction feature, and as the name reflects, the option helps you to reduce flickering on the screen. This will affect color balance and auto-brightness control.

Today, Nokia and Samsung cross-license patent agreements for a number of technologies but we predict that Nokia’s patent fees are higher than Huawei.

According to the information, the latest Nokia and Samsung agreement covers technologies in 5G and others. Samsung will make payments to Nokia for a multi-year period beginning January 1, 2023.

“Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry, and we are delighted to have reached an amicable agreement with them. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate, and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies” said President of Nokia Technologies, Jenni Lukander.

Prices:

Looking at the prices Nokia previously announced 5G patent charges with a maximum of 3 euros, which is significantly lower than the 5G patent licensing rates announced by Ericson and Qualcomm.

Qualcomm charges 2.275% to 5% of the price of the entire device. On the other hand, Ericsson’s license fee for high-end and low-end phones is 5 US dollars per unit and 2.5 US dollars per unit respectively.

Looking at Huawei, the Chinese tech maker offers the lowest price tags for 5G cross-patent charges. The company patent fee for a single smartphone that follows the 5G standard is $2.5.

Here, Huawei is selling only one type of patent, which is convenient for all of the partners.

Last year, Huawei reached 5G patent licensing and cross-licensing agreements with OPPO, Samsung, Nokia, and other companies. However, specific terms are yet to be revealed.

As a Huawei smartphone user, I love how the Chinese tech maker found its way among consumers but its decline in the smartphone market made the competition dull and the Samsung Galaxy S23 design is proof of this mishappening.

Early press renders coming from Winfuture shows us the design schematics of the Samsung Galaxy S23 and it’s just a copy-paste design. Yes, it’s an old-age design with a vertical camera arrangement identical to Galaxy S22 Ultra+ a bit from Galaxy S22 standard version.

Samsung galaxy s23 design

The rest of the phone remains plane and there are no design changes made to the phone as compared to its predecessor. This is what we can call old age and it seems like this South Korean company is enjoying the full prowess of the supply chain and support of the Android ecosystem.

On the other hand, phone makers such as Huawei are trying their best to craft new and interesting designs for consumers.

Samsung galaxy s23 design

The past generation including P20, P30, P40, and P50 are prime examples of these changes in design. Meanwhile, the upcoming P60 series will also have significant changes in appearance for both the rear case and the camera module.

I mean look at the beauty of this smartphone, even after getting attacked by the U.S. Huawei is heavily investing in its R&D on smartphones but Samsung remains quite behind in the race.

huawei p50 pro december 2022 update

What will it offer:

There’s not much to reveal from the specs side but Samsung Galaxy S23 could equip with a 6.1-inch display, followed by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

So, there are some specs on paper, since Samsung’s lazy innovation on processors such as Exynos failed to provide power for the consumers. The phone maker has decided to solely move with Qualcomm.

What Samsung is doing?

As I mentioned above, Samsung is just living in an advantageous position in the smartphone market in the absence of Huawei. The proof of that lies in these renders below.

Yes, it’s an early conclusion because there’s a Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra version. But CAD renders from Onleaks also suggest that Galaxy S23 Ultra will be identical to S22 Ultra.

The U.S. sanctions cost Huawei a big smartphone market and Samsung is only favored by the situation to top the market, as there’s no fight left against this South Korean company from other players.

Up until 2019, Huawei was at its peak performance in the global smartphone business industry. The company kept on touching double-digit growth, while Samsung struggled to save its top spot.

According to IDC, Huawei’s market share in Q1 2019 was 19% with a 50.3% year-over-year increase in shipments. It had only an 11.8% market share in the Q1 of 2018. On the other hand, Samsung had a 23.1% share with an 8.1% decline in the same quarter at 23.5% in Q1 2018.

Ban:

In May 2019, Huawei was restricted by the U.S. commerce department. Afterward, the Chinese tech maker was prohibited from accessing many U.S.-originated components and software services.

These include mobile chipsets as well as networking technologies. That’s not it, Google also stopped certifying new Huawei smartphones.

This was one of the biggest moves against Huawei from the U.S. government to settle the score over the intensified trade war with China. Here, Huawei was executed with unproven accusations.

These situations began to affect Huawei severely its roots and completely disturbed its supply chain. As it can’t import, the required materials to build new smartphones and compete with the likes of Samsung.

The effect of the U.S. ban was gradual and Huawei’s decline had just begun.

Samsung vs Huawei for 1st place:

Despite this massive problem, Huawei surpassed Samsung for the first time and became the sole company to achieve this milestone by ending its last 9 years of continues streak.

According to Q2 2020 market report from Canalys, Huawei shipped more smartphones worldwide than any other company. Huawei shipped 55.8 million devices, down 5% year on year. But second-placed Samsung shipped 53.7 million smartphones a decline of 30% as compared to Q2 2019.

Q2 2020 top smartphone

Even with this achievement, Huawei’s massive decline had been initiated. Thereafter, Huawei, from 2020 to 2022, dropped from the top to the others category in quarterly shipments.

Samsung dominance:

IDC reports, in Q3 2022, Samsung acquired a 21.2% market share for the top spot. Followed by Apple with a 17.2% share and Xiaomi in third with 13.4%. While Huawei is nowhere for the time being.

smartphone shipment Q3 2022 IDC

No Progress:

Huawei showed that Samsung is beatable but this South Korean company is indirectly favored by the U.S. sanctions, so it could thank the Trump era for this massive move. Also, even after three years, Samsung is only saving its face because there’s no one there to challenge its prowess in the smartphone industry.

But it’s temporary because Samsung is just enjoying this no-competition zone and repeating Apple’s move, followed by Android’s gift cards. This firm is not doing anything new whatsoever and will be challenged once again sooner or later.

3nm is the next stop for mobile chipsets and Taiwan’s TSMC will rip off Samsung for 3nm chipset orders from customers such as Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek.

According to a report from Taiwanese media, experts in the study of semiconductors revealed that the current 3nm yield rate is estimated to be about 60% to 70%, or even more than 70%.

Another multinational industry analyst estimated that the current yield rate of TSMC’s 3nm process may fall to about 75%-80%. “There has been such progress in the early stage, which is very impressive.”

The latest input suggests that TSMC has taken the lead in 3nm chip orders and rip off most of the orders from Samsung. In June 2022, Samsung became the first foundry business to announce the initial production of its 3nm process node.

At that time, Samsung’s 3nm yield rate was less than 20 percent and some wafers even had a yield rate of only 10 percent. An industry analyst says, Samsung actually doesn’t know where the fault is.

TSMC says its 3nm process is the most advanced semiconductor technology in both power, performance, and area (PPA). In transistor technology, and a full-node advance from the 5nm generation.

Compared to the 5nm (N5) process, the 3nm process offers up to 1.6X logic density gain and 30-35% power reduction at the same speed and supports the innovative TSMC FINFLEX architecture.

Apple, MediaTek, and Qualcomm:

After Huawei HiSilicon‘s exit, TSMC’s market share was reduced because it was one of the biggest chip customers.

Still, Apple, MediaTek, Qualcomm, AMD, and Nvidia are the top customer of TSMC and Samsung Foundry business. These clients require various chip nodes throughout the year. While, Apple may still be the first to use a 3nm chipset for next year’s iPhones, followed by Qualcomm and MediaTek.

TSMC announced that it is also preparing for 2nm fabs, which will be upgraded six times than the last node process.

Samsung needs to improve:

TSMC is a long-standing chipset printer and Samsung needs to improve its Foundry business to compete against it. That’s all to suggest for the South Korean company.

The post Despite being an Android babyface, Samsung failed to understand dynamic theme in 2022 appeared first on Huawei Central.

]]>
2022 is the year of Android 13 and Android phone makers spotted sending this software update with improved dynamic theme options, but as a babyface, it seems like Samsung still has not learned the core concepts of the dynamic theme.

Introduced with Android 12, the Material You powered dyanamic theme brings brand new settings to tweak the user interface. Instead of being just a feature, the dynamic theme became a part of Android’s soul. With Android 13, Google further polished the dynamic theme so it could be adapted to all Android devices.

Dynamic Theme (Simple version): Once you apply a new wallpaper, the phone generates a range of colors based on that wallpaper. The set of colors is called a color palette and it is then applied throughout the user interface.

Following the decline of Huawei, Samsung is enjoying unlimited Android prowess. It’s projected as a major Android promoter and a babyface. And why not? After all, the South Korean phone maker keeps on posting new mobile shipment records.

However, the handling of the dynamic theme in One UI 5 (which is based on Android 13) shows that Samsung wasn’t serious about being an Android babyface in 2022.

You may want to know, how I reached this conclusion and why Samsung is a failure when it comes to precise work. Let’s find out together.

Appearance:

The user interface is all about appearance, and so does the dynamic theme. Using the dynamic theme on Samsung One UI 5 is different from stock Android 13.

Note: I’ve used the same pixel wallpaper on both Samsung and Pixel devices. So, we can keep the comparison on the same level.

Home Screen:

Below is the home screen, which looks as usual on both One UI 5 and stock Android 13.

home screen

Quick Settings:

Both of the quick settings are using Material You in elements, such as quick access icons and sliders. However, the background on stock Android 13 is solid and remains black. On the other hand, Samsung uses a translucent background in the quick settings, which has not changed even with the Android 13. It is Samsung’s way of implementing features. While in some scenarios, this way obstructs the viewing experience.

Quick settings

For example, the translucent background is now reflecting the colors of the app opened in the background. It also compromises the look and feel of the quick settings icons and the whole quick settings UI. But it becomes subtle when used on top of the Settings menu.

Below you can check the example of the quick settings opened over the following screens.

(Left – on top of home screen wallpaper, on top of Play Store, on top of Settings menu).

Quick Settings

Settings:

The setting is an important part of UI, which we access at least once a day. The layout, font, and elements are different in these two softwares. But Samsung used a slight proportion of the color palette in the Settings’ background and remain neutral for applying to the rest of the user interface.

Settings menu

Themed Icons:

I love themed icons because it brings a new look to the app icons. However, Samsung’s way of doing things is a little more disappointing than what it actually looks.

Below you can check Samsung One UI icons painted with color pallets alongside stock android icons. The use and management of contrast in the background and tint on the shape (size too) are super lazy on One UI app icons.

On the flip side, stock Android gets these things done in the best way possible.

themed icons

There’s further inspection on this available, apply Dark Mode and see the change.

dark mode

Verdict:

We don’t need to explain the results. But It is certainly not nice to implement the dynamic theme for the Android babyface Samsung in 2022.

What could’ve happened?

If possible, Samsung should’ve to blend more into the material rather than bleed into the material. Improve icons, and check visibility levels of the UI elements and the current issues may resolve to an extent.

Samsung One UI 5 is the latest mobile software based on Android 13 but the software is making slow progress for a better user experience as compared to Huawei EMUI 12.

One UI 5 is one of the most low-approved software and it lacks innovation as well as smoothness. Don’t take my word for it, if you have a Samsung phone, you may like it ‘a bit’ but if you have a Huawei phone or even an iPhone then, you may want Samsung to kick in some new efforts.

Currently, Samsung is busy sending One UI 5 software to old devices. As compared to One UI 4.1, Samsung has made some changes in the user interface and a few in the features section. However, these changes are teeny tiny on the surface.

For instance, Samsung One UI 5 quick settings are similar to One UI 4.1. There is a small change that is powered by Android 13’s Material You design and the rest of the UI and functionality remain the same.

To access One UI 5 quick settings, you can swipe down from the top and swipe again to open the full panel. On the top tray, you will get key features of search, power, and settings, as well as edit.

Followed by a large space for time and date and followed by device control and media output manager. The bottom section includes SIM manager options, quick access icons, and a brightness slider. These are the same old features that were available in One UI 4.1.

one ui 5 quick settings emui 12

On the other hand, EMUI 12 renovated the user experience for Huawei smartphone users. The Control Panel (quick settings) combines a number of new features and services that weren’t there before.

The control panel brings simplicity at hand. Starting from the top section, the phone could use it to control WiFi, Bluetooth connected device way better than One UI 5. There’s a media controller that will allow you to manage playback

Do you think that’s the end of the story? Nope, because Huawei EMUI 12 quick settings enable audio projection to broadcast music on different devices all at once.

The EMUI 12 control panel has quick settings icon section, which has big dials than Samsung One UI 5. Talking about creativity, EMUI 12 further outshines One UI 5 with its Super Device and Smart Device controllers.

Samsung is free to brag about smartphone sales in the global market but when it comes to features and user experience, One UI 5 is still far away.

What do you think, Samsung One UI 5 has better quick settings or EMUI 12? Let us know via the tweet below.

Samsung has transferred 98 U.S. technology patents to Huawei, this is quite a big patent-sharing activity and we’ve some more information to share.

South Korean media, Thelec reported that Samsung transferred 81 patents in 2019 and there are 98 U.S. patents (new ones) to Huawei last month. Therefore, a total of 179 patents transferred from Samsung to Huawei so far.

Huawei and Samsung signed a cross-license patent-sharing agreement, which allows both of these companies to share patents with each other. However, the recent agreement is just a new version, which was first signed in 2019 after their patent dispute.

According to the information, the worth of patents shared by both Samsung to Huawei is likely to be the same. It is also revealed that the patent shared under this agreement are related to telecommunication, charging, camera, display, and more.

Currently, there are no specific details about the patent technologies that Huawei will use to produce its products but we can remain optimistic that these will do some good to the tech maker.

It’s reported that Huawei has signed a similar agreement with major players in the tech industry including the home ground smartphone maker, Oppo. Huawei is focusing more on sharing patent technologies with other companies in a way to make revenue from its patent prowess.
