Amid challenges and restrictions, Huawei Mobile Services AKA HMS ecosystem is growing rapidly and touching new heights as 2022 marks record progress for this suite of services.

Huawei Mobile Services is a suite of cloud-based applications that are designed to provide various features across different Huawei devices and software.

So, how we’ll measure Huawei Mobile Services progress in 2022? Actually, we’ve some statics and numbers to show you what HMS has achieved this year.

  • AppGallery now has over 580 million active monthly users (MAUs) around the world – an increase of 16% vs 2020 Q3; and the MAUs of Quick Apps now exceeds 160 million.
  • The number of apps that can be downloaded from AppGallery to HMS smartphones has increased by 147% year-on-year.
  • More than 220,000 applications are integrated with HMS Core worldwide; up by 120% vs 2020 Q3.
  • AppGallery enabled over 432 billion app distributions in 2021, a jump of 12.5% over 2020 and 96% compared with 2019. Outside the Chinese mainland, the distribution quality has a notable year-on-year increase of 56%.
  • Registered developers working with HMS worldwide have grown by 200% from 2020 Q3 to 6 million now.

The Huawei ID ensures that users’ personal details are fully protected whether they are downloading apps, managing multiple devices, backing up data, and much more.
  • Petal Search, HMS’s proprietary search engine, now has a feature that allows users to explore information via text, visual, and voice connecting with over 3000 ecosystem partners.
  • Petal Search is currently providing full coverage of football action, ranging from information about the teams and tournament, features that allow fans to vote for their team, and multiple statistics to enhance their enjoyment of the event.
  • With MAUs now exceeding 40 million, Petal Maps, the popular navigation tool, has just rolled out new updates to include AR Walking Navigation, Real-Time Location Sharing and a User Growth System, which creates a more immersive and realistic map experience for users.
  • Huawei Assistant achieved over 260 million MAUs by September this year, providing users with SmartCare Cards convenient services and building full-scenario services including travel, urban, shopping, and finance services.

Since the very beginning of Huawei HMS smartphones, users are trying to find a way to install Google apps such as Play Store on their devices. With time, there are a number of solutions appeared and eventually, fade away. However, there’s one called, Gbox that got our attention and may work out to “some extent” to serve your Google apps requirements.

Note – The installation procedure is at the bottom.

Before we begin to install Google apps on your Huawei phone via GBox. You need to understand important things about how this article will navigate:

  1. What is Gbox
  2. Requirements
  3. How it works
  4. Supported Apps
  5. Precautions
  6. Tips
  7. Tested on
  8. Installation instructions
  9. Our take

What is GBox:

According to the official website, Gbox was founded in 2018 in Singapore. Born from VIRTUAL CUBE PTE. LTD. It’s described as a multi-platform instrumented application focused on Android.

This app comes with a pre-built, out-of-the-box suite of Google app services. In that case, you won’t need to install GMS services plugins or any other kind of APK files on your phone separately. To be mentioned, there’s no version rollback required as well.

Requirements:

  1. HMS powered phone
  2. Gbox app
  3. Internet

How:

According to the app, Gbox has virtualized into a random Android device. It creates a virtual Google apps space in your Huawei phone parallel to the EMUI apps.

Also, the app installed remains within Gbox and once you uninstall Gbox, all of these Google apps vanish as well.

Furthermore, every time you launch an app, it’s solely powered by the Gbox in virtual mode. Interestingly, the app retains your last usage and could be resumed from the taskbar.

Supported Apps:

Gbox support all of the Google apps and you can install them on your Huawei smartphone but only a few (including the third party) will work well. These are

  1. Google app
  2. Gmail
  3. Google maps
  4. Youtube
  5. Facebook
  6. Instagram
  7. WhatsApp
  8. Twitter
  9. Line
  10. Uber

Still, there are a bunch of other apps that are supported with Gbox but we’ve not tested them.

Games: You can access all of the apps on Play Store but other than those mentioned above won’t work or crash Gbox itself. So, we suggest you get them via APKMirror, AppGallery, or any other third-party website.

Privacy and Precautions:

Gbox promises to protect your privacy and not to collect data. But there are a few things that we suggest you do if you want to use Gbox or any similar application on your Huawei phone.

  1. Use a Gmail account to log in that you don’t use to share any personal, private, or official email use cases. Create a new one if you want to.
  2. Gbox for permission to access sensitive data such as storage and files. These are required to install a new app.
  3. Gbox will take a part of your phone’s battery life but we have not found it draining or consuming too much of cells.
  4. The instructions to install Gbox are easy but we suggest you read them carefully.

Tips:

Here are the tips that need to apply for the best use cases:

  1. Install apps one by one
  2. Wait until an app installation finishes
  3. Create an app shortcut, once it is installed from the Play Store
  4. Do not open apps from Gbox
  5. Launch an app from the home screen icon
  6. Open an app, and let it sync the data
  7. Repeat the 6th step at least four to five times
  8. We won’t suggest you keep your expectation high on all GMS apps.

You can force stop Gbox from running in the background via the “Force stop” option from Apps settings.

Tested on:

We testing Gbox running on EMUI 10, EMUI 11, EMUI 12, EMUI 13. The solution is running on all of the devices including Mate 50 Pro.

Instructions:

Let’s see how to install Google apps using Gbox on your Huawei phone.

Download Gbox:

Visit the Gboxlab website and download the latest version on your device.

Note: Download only the stable version.

gbox download

Install Google Apps:

These are divided into two parts, the first will show you to set up Gbox, and the second half will show to install Google apps.

1st – Navigate to Gbox app on your phone and install it.

install Gapp

2nd – Open the Gbox app

3rd – Agree app’s terms and disable battery optimizations (will be prompted automatically).

gbox permission

4th – Tap on the “Check” button in the top right corner.

5th – Enable – “Require permission” and “Battery optimization whitelist”. Once enabled, press back.

gbox permission

Install Google Apps

6th – Tap on any “Recommended Apps” and allow required permissions.

7th – Sign in to your Google account

gbox install google apps huawei

8th – Tap Install to install that app.

9th – Once installed, “Add” app icon to the home screen.

install google apps huawei

10th – You can download other apps in the same way.

How to update, create icons and delete the app:

You can tap and hold any app and tap on Upgrade to update the app or create an app icon.

Change region:

You can also take on Settings and change app suggestions according to region.

Our take:

Using Gbox is simple but we suggest you follow our precaution notes. It surely works in limits but it surely installs some apps. Yet we surely want to hear from you tag us on Twitter and carefully follow the instructions to use it.

Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) has built a vast ecosystem and the latest inputs reveal that HMS Core has reached more than 6 million global developers. It’s a huge achievement for this mobile services suit.

On November 15, the tech giant organized the Huawei Developer Day in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The one-day event motto was to encourage developers and promote new solutions that can aid the digital economy growth in the region.

Alongside unique solutions, the company also shared some key points of Huawei Mobile Services. Accordingly, Huawei mentioned that the HMS Core is serving as one of the top 3 app stores in the world and exceeded 6 million global developers.

On the flip side, the manufacturer also described that the HMS Core has created 25,030 APIs. After the official intro in 2018, the HMS Core has now achieved new heights in the success graph.

Huawei Mobile Services – Solutions

As mentioned, the company has unveiled a bunch of unique developer solutions. This includes HMS-based inventions, Huawei Ads, Push, and geo-fencing features. Furthermore, it has done some seamless work with Petal Maps.

Huawei HMS global developers

Consequently, developers will experience better lane-level guidance and better interconnection facilities with new technologies. Huawei has assured that it will continue to bring more impressive solutions in AI and technology field.

Eventually, these products will help the developers to build better apps for Huawei smartphones and other devices with high efficiency.

Growth

Last year, the HMS of developers was 2.7 million. Hence, this is a huge milestone in the HMS ecosystem to gear up to 6 million partners and developers in just a year.

On the other hand, Huawei has further strengthened the HMS environment. The past report reveals that the total number of HMS-powered applications has surpassed 220,000.

In the meantime, we have seen enormous changes in Huawei Mobile Services. It would be interesting to see how Huawei evolves with HMS services for the consumers and developers simultaneously.

On October 2022, Dr. Jaime Gonzalo, VP of Consumer Mobile Services Europe at Huawei, people from the global gaming industry were given insight into how they could achieve an improved return on their considerable investment in new and existing games to boost AppGallery for game distributions.

In the past few years, AppGallery is becoming a popular platform for games as it serves millions of monthly active users with new and existing gaming apps. Up until today, AppGallery now lists games from some leading titles such as PUBG Mobile, Mobile legends, Free Fire, State of Survival, and more. Hence, Huawei continues to work on the games section for AppGallery users to enrich its user engagement.

“Games developers are finding it increasingly difficult to reach new audiences. The major challenge is that customer acquisition cost has increased significantly over the years due to market saturation and inflated pricing. That’s why alternative app platforms such as AppGallery are emerging and playing their part to provide developers with improved revenue-generating opportunities,” said Jaime Gonzalo”.

Huawei appgallery games

Currently, 99.9% of apps downloaded via the leading app distribution platforms are losing users monthly, pushing the costs of retention higher and higher.

Gonzalo pointed out that AppGallery currently has 580 million global monthly active users, 45 million of which are in Europe. Outside China, AppGallery has increased in-app revenue by 3x year-on-year, casual game growth has increased by 20x over the same period, and monthly ad revenue for developers has doubled.

“We have a high spending audience,” Gonzalo told the Pocket Gamer audience. “In countries like Germany the ARPPU is $200, in the UK the average is $159 while in Poland it is $100, and this is coupled with very low developer effort. Existing Android games can be ready to onboard to AppGallery in just a few minutes. We also support every game with solutions, promotions, and developer kits, which accelerate distribution and boost revenue numbers.”

Right after the events of Entity List, Huawei has been banned from accessing Google Mobile Services (GMS) on new devices. As new devices required a GMS certificate, they can no longer install the Google apps pre-loaded and ship them to the customers.

Huawei has been in the middle of the U.S. –  China trade war for a long time but in the middle of these scenarios comes a company named – Huawei. It has been sanctioned by the U.S. Commerce Department under the Entity List.

This prohibits the company from accessing tech made in the U.S. or made by U.S. companies. This includes both software and hardware services as well as devices.

GMS:

The lack of GMS had a big impact on Huawei’s smartphone sales in the global market, as it’s not required in the home ground (China). Instead, HarmonyOS is doing pretty great on both new and old devices in the Chinese market.

However, the global Huawei users have shifted to other smartphones such as iPhone or Samsung, or any other Chinese phone makers.

Still, the big question is whether Huawei needs Google Mobile Services and do you want it to bring back Google apps on smartphones.

In the current context, Huawei should get it back because its consumer base is still not ‘fully’ ready to consume Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). And the company could enrich the consumer base by using both sides by side because Android allows it to do so.

Still, the road to getting back to the GMS is not easy and with the recent changes in U.S. trade policy, there’s still some hope that Huawei could once again access this software suite on new devices.

But, nothing is certain and we will have to keep on waiting for any inputs that come into this matter.

Until then, you can participate in the poll below and give your opinion on whether should Huawei bring back Google Mobile apps or not.

A few days ago, the news reveals that the U.S. could ease the Huawei ban on certain levels. However, there’s a question that you guys have been asking us – “So does this means, Huawei will return the GMS suit to smartphones in the global market?” Let’s find out the answer.

The report says that Huawei could access American-made technologies if it agrees to follow U.S. commerce-made guidelines. The commerce department has come up with these new guidelines in the name of “Standards”.

However, we need to understand that commerce has not revealed any details about the allowed technologies. Yet, it does mention that these include both hardware and software stuff.

GMS?

It has various sections, for example, the chipset precision and other related software but it may also consist of Google Mobile Services (GMS). Once again, there are no specifics revealed on the key technologies shared under these new standards.

Google Mobile Services or GMS is a proprietary suite of services for Android smartphones. Different OEMs certify their models via GMS and install Google apps as bloatware or out-of-the-box Google apps.

What really happened?

In 2019, Huawei has been placed under the U.S. Entity List, which bars the firm from accessing U.S.-based or made products. These impact the product manufacturing mostly, the smartphones

The lack of the required chipset and ousting of GMS caused big in Huawei’s smartphone market growth. Instead, the company has to face a big dip in the industry.

Meanwhile, Huawei developed a new GMS rival – AppGallery for its global smartphones as Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). It has AppGallery, Huawei’s app distribution platform, and a bunch of other mobile apps that accompany with AppGallery. These are Petal Seach, Assitant, Celia AI voice, Petal Clip, Petal Keyboard, and more.

Still, the return of GMS could do the trick for your Huawei smartphone and it could run alongside HMS without any issues. That way, Huawei consumers could get a 2X user experience for sure.

Yes, the title and the image are quite correct, LeTV is back and the Chinese phone maker has brought in a new phone – LeTV Y2 Pro smartphone with iPhone 13 Pro design and it features Huawei software services – HMS Core. The phone is a kind of super cheap copy of the iPhone 13 Pro but it’s not the first when LeTV has brought in such a device because LeTV Y1 Pro already blended Apple’s iPhone 13 design into a low-nutrition diet.

The interesting part of the story is that the LeTV Y2 Pro is powered by Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and since it has Huawei’s software system in China, it’s a big hand that’s supported by a large ecosystem from the Chinese tech giant.

The LeTV Y2 Pro comes in three color options Black, Blue, and Orange, and has three variants – 4GB+32GB, 4GB+128GB, and 6GB+256GB, priced at 599 yuan, 799 yuan, and 999 yuan respectively.

This cheap interpretation of the iPhone 13 Pro is marketed with the Android 11 operating system and Huawei HMS core cloud services as well as mobile applications, also, the LeTV Y2 Pro features a triple rear camera, fingerprint unlocks, AI features, and frosted glass back, and an Octa-core processor.

letv y2 iphone huawei

That’s not the end guys, this new LeTV phone sports a 6.5-inch display with a number of new smart features offered by the Le OS 9.1. It packs a 4000mAh battery with dual sim card support. Currently, the phone is not ready to ship for the global market but it will only be released in the Chinese market.

Y1 Pro:

A few months ago, LeTv launched the Y1 Pro, which was a copy of the standard iPhone 13 with a number of stripped capabilities. You can call it just another version of the iPhone 13 (i am serious about that) because it features a 6.5-inch 1560 x 720 LCD resolution display with a notch on the head, it supports face recognition, a 4G processor, as well as a 4000 mAh battery that supports 10W charging.

Conclusion:

Jokes aside, LeTV has given a good restart to its mobile business, and starting from the entry-level phones could be a better choice for this Chinese phone maker.
