The results of the fourth quarter of 2020 are here, which shows that the global smartphone shipments reached 359.6 million units. This figure shows a small decline of 2% year-on-year (YoY).

In Q4 2020, Apple became dominant by selling most iPhones ever in a single quarter and ranked first on the list of smartphone makers with 81.8 million units. This is a 4% growth compared to the last year.

Samsung slipped to the second and shipped 62 million units in the quarter with a 12% decline. Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo made their places inside the top 5 smartphone sellers.

However, for the first time in the last six years, Huawei ranked outside of the top 5 list and placed on teh sixth spot. The Chinese tech giant shipped 32 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2020 with over 40% YoY and 35% quarter on quarter (QoQ) decline.

Global smartphone market share Q4 2020

Huawei smartphone market share decline:

This drastic decline in Huawei’s smartphone sales and market share is a result of the restrictions imposed under the U.S. Entity List in 2019, which prohibits the company from purchasing the U.S. made components and software services required to build new smartphones.

Following this action, Huawei phones cannot certify with Google Mobile Services (GMS), which is essential to run Google’s applications such as Play Store, Youtube Gmail, Google Maps, and more.

After that, the company introduced the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), which is a replacement for the GMS. In this case, the consumers need a bit more time to adopt a new software ecosystem compared to the GMS, of which they’re used.

The removal of Google apps seems to greatly affect the sales of new Huawei smartphones in the overseas markets but the home market remains stable because GMS is not required in the Chinese smartphone market.

In 2020, the U.S. further tighten the Entity List rules on Huawei and blocked access for the company to manufacturer HiSilicon made Kirin chipset design through chipmakers such as TSMC. This led the company to stop the production of high-end Kirin chipsets in the same year.

Following this event, Huawei also sold its subsidiary, Honor that highly affects Huawei’s overall smartphone sales, and industry experts believe that this partition with the subsidiary will bring a further collapse in Huawei’s smartphone sales.

Recently, ahead of the end of his presidency, Donald Trump canceled the licenses of all of the existing Huawei suppliers including U.S. chipmaker Intel.

Huawei, for the first time, surpassed the South Korean smartphone maker – Samsung for an entire quarter amid the COVID-19 pandemic, reveals a report from Canalys.

According to the report, Huawei shipped 55.8 million devices, declining by 5% year on year in Q2 2020. Samsung, on the other hand, comes in second place by shipping 53.7 million phones, a sharp 30% fall compared to the same quarter last year.

Huawei is still under US restrictions but its home market share is surging rapidly over the past quarters amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a remarkable result that few people would have predicted a year ago,” said Canalys Senior Analyst Ben Stanton.

“If it wasn’t for COVID-19, it wouldn’t have happened. Huawei has taken full advantage of the Chinese economic recovery to reignite its smartphone business. Samsung has a very small presence in China, with less than 1% market share, and has seen its core markets, such as Brazil, India, the United States, and Europe, ravaged by outbreaks and subsequent lockdowns.”

According to a recent report from Counterpoint Research, Huawei in the second quarter held its highest ever 46% of the total share in Chinese smartphone market with 14% Yearly growth.

On the other hand, Huawei claimed a 60% share of the total 5G smartphone market in China, which is a massive result of its home-market product strategy.

“Taking first place is very important for Huawei,” said Canalys Analyst Mo Jia.

“It is desperate to showcase its brand strength to domestic consumers, component suppliers, and developers. It needs to convince them to invest and will broadcast the message of its success far and wide in the coming months. But it will be hard for Huawei to maintain its lead in the long term. Its major channel partners in key regions, such as Europe, are increasingly wary of ranging Huawei devices, taking on fewer models, and bringing in new brands to reduce risk. Strength in China alone will not be enough to sustain Huawei at the top once the global economy starts to recover.” Jia added.

Huawei maintained the lead in China with a 39% market share by growing 11% compared to last year, despite the decline of 20%, says market research firm Canalys.

The data shows, Huawei has acquired 11% Year on Year growth rate by shipping 33.3 million smartphone units and 39% market share compared to 30 million units shipments and 29.8% share during the same timeline last year.

On the other hand, Huawei shipped 8.9 million 5G smartphones in China in 2019, capturing a total of 78% market share.

To be noted the figures shown in the report includes the sales count of both Huawei and its subsidiary Honor.

Similar to the Q3 2019, Huawei competitors have seen a continuous decline. OPPO decreased by 25%, shipments reached 14 million units, Vivo decreased by 29% with 13.1 million shipments units, Xiaomi decreased by 14% with 8.1 million units shipped and Apple fell by 12% and shipped only 10.1 million units.

“Channel inventory build-up in Q2 and Q3 adversely impacted Huawei’s performance in Q4,” said Nicole Peng, Canalys’ VP Mobility.

“Huawei will find it challenging to persuade smartphone distribution partners to increase wallet share of Huawei’s devices in 2020, as the sell-out of 4G smartphones, especially the mid to high-end, is becoming difficult.”

The third quarter of 2019 is special because, for the first time in two years, the global smartphone market has recorded growth. And this quarter has also brought good results for Huawei.

According to the market research from Canalys, Huawei has bounced back in the shipment game and sold 66.8 million smartphone units, with 19% shares and 29% annual growth.

To be noted the figures shown in the report includes the sales count of both Huawei and its subsidiary Honor.

During the same timeline last year, Huawei sold 51.9 million units with a 14.9% market share. In Q2 this year, Huawei sold 58.7 million units with 17.7% market shares and 8% annual growth.

Back in may, Huawei was included in the US Entity-List that caused the company a low growth Q2. However, the company is still doing great in its home ground, which is helping the Chinese tech giant to maintain and score new shipment record every quarter on the global market.

In a domestic report from Canalys for Q3 2019, Huawei has grown 66% in the Chinese smartphone market and is the only smartphone maker to see business growth.

Aside from the domestic market, Huawei has also improved its shipment in many overseas markets where volume increased sequentially from 21.5 million in Q2 to 25.3 million in Q3.

As many distributors and operators resumed procurement for Huawei smartphones which had been paused in Q2. This pent-up demand for Huawei devices caused a surge in orders.

Despite all of the US tactics, Huawei is growing high and currently moving at the top speed. And in the third quarter of this year, Huawei has again increased its market share and growth rate in the largest smartphone market in the world.

According to the market research from Canalys, Huawei has expanded its lead in China with Q3 2019, which counts as the sixth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth amid the slowdown in the Chinese smartphone market.

The data shows, Huawei has acquired a blazing 66% Year on Year growth rate by shipping 41.5 million smartphone units and 42.4% market share compared to 25.0 million units shipments and 24.9% share during the same mentioned timeline last year.

To be noted the figures shown in the report includes the sales count of both Huawei and its subsidiary Honor, which is doing a fantastic job for its parent company.

“Huawei opened a huge gap between itself and other vendors. It has 25% more share than this quarter’s runner-up, Vivo,” commented Nicole Peng, Canalys VP of mobility.

“Its dominant position gives Huawei a lot of power to negotiate with the supply chain and to increase its wallet share within channel partners. Huawei is in a strong position to consolidate its dominance further amid 5G network rollout, given its tight operator relationships in 5G network deployment, and control over key components such as local network-compatible 5G chipsets compared with local peers. This puts significant pressure on Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, which find it very hard to make any breakthrough.”

In addition to Huawei in Q3 2019, competitors have declined, OPPO decreased by 20%, shipments reached 17.0 million units, Vivo decreased by 23% with 17.5 million shipments units, Xiaomi decreased by 33% with 8.8 million units shipped and Apple fell by 28% and shipped only 5.1 million units.

Canalys analyst Mo Jia, mentioned that the US ‘Entity-List’ has affected Huawei’s market growth in Europe, as Samsung and Xiaomi has emerged as a direct beneficiary of this new breakdown. However, it’s expected that this slowdown will be temporary and may soon pick up the pace.

Huawei acquired the highest smartphone market share in China for Q2, Apple and others face decrease: Canalys

A promotional campaign by Huawei and local retailers supporting the brand was everywhere, said, local consumers. They’re also influenced by the unfair US policy for Huawei in its trade war with China.

To hike sales up, Huawei has reduced prices for its flagship lineup including P and Mate series smartphones and other smartphones, also it’s applying promotional offers on its sub-brand Honor, which is doing an amazing job for the company.

Moreover, Huawei’s rise in the home ground is also hurting its rivals including Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo. While Apple shipments fell 14%.

According to the second quarter results shown by Canalys, Huawei has acquired 31% Year on Year growth rate by shipping 37.3 million units compared to 28.5 million units shipped during the same period last year with a market share of 27.6%.

“Huawei’s addition to the US Entity List caused uncertainty overseas, but in China, it has kept its foot on the accelerator,” said Canalys Analyst Mo Jia”
